More than 130 biotech companies currently operate in North Rhine-Westphalia. Qiagen, Germany's largest biotech enterprise, is based in Hilden, near the city of Düsseldorf. BioRiver is also home to the cell sorting specialist Miltenyi Biotec GmbH (Bergisch-Gladbach). The presence of around 180 biotech service providers further enhances the status of BioRiver as one of Germany's foremost biotechnology locations.
The companies clustered around Cologne and Düsseldorf have acquired outstanding skills in the field of diagnostics, molecular medicine, biochip technology, non-viral gene transfer, tissue engineering and stem cell therapy.
