The BioRiver Cities Aachen, Bonn, Cologne and Düsseldorf are the business hubs of BioRiver with high-capacity infrastructure and two international airports.
Aachen With its special strengths in the fields of bioprocess engineering and biomaterials the Aachen-Juelich region has played a major part in establishing the international reputation of BioRiver as a biotechnology location. Aachen-Juelich also excels in the field of "green" biotechnology R&D. Close cooperation with companies and research establishments based in Belgium and the Netherlands (which are just across the border from Aachen-Julich) have led to the emergence of an attractive biotechnology cluster catering for a broad spectrum of applications.
Bonn Traditionally Bonn is one of Germany's major locations for science and research. The scientific highlight is the CEASAR foundation (Center of Advanced European Studies and Research) focusing on interdisciplinary research on future oriented themes and the corresponding marketing strategies.
Bonn's 'Life & Brain' project will promote molecular medicine and neuroscience, serving as a platform for top-level researchers and as an incubator for spin-off companies. The city also hosts a series of leading German organisations fostering and promoting science.
Cologne-Düsseldorf The Cologne-Düsseldorf area has a strong tradition of research and innovation. With the Cologne Gene Center and the long-established spin-offs from Duesseldorf University the area fulfils all the preconditions for a vibrant biotechnology sector. Institutions such as Duesseldorf University, Cologne University, the Cologne Center for Molecular Medicine and the Max Planck Institute for Breeding Research provide a strong basis for internationally competitive research and ground-breaking ideas.
Today, the Cologne/Duesseldorf area is an excellent location for biotechnology start-ups. These companies value the unique advantages offered by this region. To foster technology transfer and nurture synergies between companies and research establishments a number of incubator and technology centers have been set up in the immediate vicinity of the universities. These provide fertile ground for the commercialization of research results.
